The Selection of the type of discharge valve is dependent on the job it is expected to do.

Slide Gate Valves for  Batch Discharge

These valves are used for batch discharging  material from a vessel.  Material collects until
a high level is reached, the system is shut down, then discharged manually.

Some materials bridge too easily ( like carbon black, paper fibers, wood chips ), and an
unusually  large slide gate would  be required.  For these materials, use a continuous 
discharge device instead.
